Insider becomes the first publisher to complete Scope3 carbon footprint assessment

Rigorous analysis marks key milestone in publisher’s partnership with innovative industry carbon reduction start-up

NEW YORK, NY – April 11, 2023 – Insider, the popular global news publisher, today announced that it has become the first publisher to complete a thorough carbon footprint assessment by Scope3, the sustainability start-up working to codify an industry standard for carbon emissions measurement and reduction. Working with Scope3, Insider is committed to taking bold steps to measure and reduce its carbon footprint around the globe.

The partnership entails a rigorous assessment of Insider’s media supply chain footprint using Scope3’s proprietary methodology to measure end-to-end emissions. As part of the assessment process, Insider underwent a thorough audit of its entire ad tech setup and an analysis of carbon vs. revenue throughout its ad stack. The Scope3 assessment is a critical first step in helping Insider identify areas to reduce emissions, such as cleaning up ads.txt.

“We believe it’s vitally important for the industry to work collectively to reduce our carbon footprint – and now is the time to start taking action,” said Chao Liao, SVP, Insider Advertising. “We are excited to partner with Scope3 on a carbon reduction initiative that we believe can help publishers lead a necessary conversation and collaboration with both advertisers and ad tech companies.

Upon completion of the assessment – which deployed a “systemic reduction” approach – Insider immediately took action to reduce its carbon emissions. This resulted in a more than 20% reduction in carbon emissions in Q1 of this year. Going forward, Insider plans to work with Scope3 on making more significant reductions to its carbon footprint including offering Green Media Products, which would provide partners with the ability to measure and compensate for the carbon emissions associated with their advertising investments.

Insider has a holistic commitment to sustainability, including an editorial focus on global climate and sustainability issues. Insider recently launched its “One Planet” editorial vertical focused on covering the latest climate news, stories, and analysis.

Said Julia Hood, Executive Editor, Strategic Initiatives and Special Projects at Insider: “Insider's enterprising audience is always looking for specific ideas on how to improve their lives and their communities. That's why we launched One Planet, which we call 'the optimists destination for climate action'. The platform focuses on what changes, big and small, people can make in their homes, workplaces, and communities — all underpinned by breakthrough innovation."

Insider’s commitment to green media and organizational reductions has a goal of making an impact on the collective publishing sphere by contributing to the overall shrinkage of the industry’s carbon footprint.
